One of the amazing things about traveling is meeting other travelers. And while Gloria and I connected with people from other countries, we seemed to meet quite a few Canadians. I think there’s something comforting to be able to communicate in the same language.
And if there was a time to meet other people to share a meal, it would be over a rijsttafel dinner. Rijsttafel, meaning, rice table, is a traditional Indonesian dinner which features a variety of small dishes ranging from vegetarian to fish, pork, beef and chicken. As a former colony of the Netherlands, Indonesia has left its mark on Dutch cuisine, gifting it with the awesome-ness that is rijsttafel.
Our rijsttafel dinner included: Chicken Brochette, Stewed Beef, Seasoned Pork, Curried Chicken, Egg in Balinese Sauce, Gado Gado (salad with peanut Sauce), Marinated Potatoes, a selection of rice and Fried Bananas. Definitely a meal to share.
With a huge arrangement of food, rijsttafel is certainly something to be enjoyed as a group.
While there are many highly recommended Indonesian restaurants in Amsterdam that offer rijsttafel, advance reservations are often required. After much researching we settled on Puri Mas, a restaurant that was still serving rijsttafel till late in the evening — reservations, not required.
